Father’s Day at Bethesda: Al and Beth

As we continue to celebrate our Mothers and Fathers of Bethesda this spring, we’re shining a spotlight on Al and his daughter, Beth. They’ve lived at Village North Retirement Community for almost five years and spend every day together!

How would you describe your Dad’s parenting style?

Beth: [He was] the easy one, Mom was the hard one. We knew how to work her. She told us we couldn’t go out at a specific time and he let us go. She came home and found us. I said, “Dad said we could!”

How many kids do you have?

Al: Three.

B: But I’m the best. And I’m the only girl.

A: You were the first one. You’re the one we practiced on.

What is one of your favorite things about your Dad?

B: That he’s always there. And he doesn’t judge.

A: Well, at least I don’t say it.

What is one thing you’re most proud of when it comes to your children?

A: That they’re all concerned about other people and they’re kind and helpful.

What things did you used to do as a family?

B: When we lived in Oregon, we went to Portland probably once a month to the big shopping center and I always got a troll doll and my brothers always got a Matchbox car.

What do you like to do together now?

A: What do we do other than eat out?

B: Yeah, we eat at Bandana’s so often the servers know what we want!

Do you have any advice for young parents?

B: Not to be so hovering.

And when asked what they love about living at Village North…

B: It’s friendly.

A: Both the staff and other residents. We found them to be friendly and helpful. I began to realize I had more people that I consider friends here than I did before.
