We sat down with these Bethesda Lovebirds at their home at Village North Retirement Community and learned all about their strong family values and commitment to each other. John and Shelia have been together over 50 years and never miss their yearly family reunion!
How did you meet?
J: We went to the same high school in Chicago. That’s how we originally met. And when I graduated from high school, I met her sister. [Her sister] used to sit up in the window everyday – I worked for Pepsi Cola – and I’d have my Pepsi uniform on, and she used to tease me and say “Pepsi, where’s my Pepsi?”
S: All of our family was crazy about Buddy (John). We’d say, “Hey Pepsi, hey Pepsi!”
J: One day I got [her sister] eight 16oz bottles and said, “Here is your Pepsi, leave me alone.” And she said, “I’ve got somebody I want you to meet. It’s my sister.”
What were your first impressions of each other?
S: He was so quiet in school.
J: Well one thing about her – she was loud.
What is your favorite thing about each other?
J: Her ability to communicate with practically anybody. She’s always willing to talk.
S: He always made sure that I was alright.
What is your best advice for young couples?
J: Stick to Bible principles. And if you have issues, sit down and discuss them.
What would you say makes your marriage successful?
J: Being able to communicate with each other.
And when asked about their life at Village North…
S: I, believe it or not, lived in this area and worked here before we got married.
J: We enjoy it here. It’s a nice quiet place and everybody gets along.
S: And to think I was here 30 years ago working with the seniors!
