Bethesda Lovebirds, Debbie and Mike have been together almost 50 years and never miss a good morning or goodnight kiss. There’s no denying the love between these Bethesda Terrace residents!
How did you meet?
D: A blind date through his sister.
What were your first impressions of each other?
D: Well, he was late. He came to my house, and we talked until two o’clock in the morning and I said, “I’m sorry to kick you out but I’ve got school tomorrow and it’s late.”
M: And I said, “I’ve been waiting for you to be quiet so I can kiss you goodnight!”
D: We dated for five weeks, and he said he wasn’t going to call me for a week just to see if what [he was] feeling [was] real. He lasted for five days and he asked me to marry him.
What is your favorite thing about each other?
M: Her smile. Because when she smiles, her eyes light up.
D: His heart. He used to win me over with his words. He got me a votive candle holder and a candle and he said, “This is not just to warm your body, but to warm your heart.” It gives me goosebumps still!
M: I nailed it.
What is your best advice for young couples?
D: Communication.
M: No secrets. Faith and faith in each other.
D: Faith in the Lord. Because we weren’t always as faithful and that’s when we had rough times. Once we invited Him back in, that’s when things got easier.
What would you say makes your marriage successful?
D: Patience. Biting your tongue when necessary.
M: Both of our tongues are numb (both laugh). I’d say that and communication. And a sense of humor.
D: We make each other laugh. Me more than him.
And when asked about their life at Bethesda Terrace…
D: When I walked in here, this felt like a hug.
M: I said, “I’m home.” So that was it.
D: Housekeeping for me, food for him. Friendly people around here – the residents, the staff. We have friends and neighbors right at [our] fingertips.
