As the calendar speeds toward the end of November, the St. Louis area is buzzing with the excitement of Thanksgiving. If you’re looking for something special to do, whether you want to attend a festival or watch a parade, or stay indoors and enjoy some tasty food and good company, there are plenty of Thanksgiving events around town perfect for seniors.
Thanksgiving Events You’ll Love
Ameren Thanks-for-Giving Parade
Kick off your Thanksgiving with the Ameren Thanks-for-Giving Parade, a traditional favorite for more than four decades. In the past, designated vantage points reserved just for folks with physical or developmental disabilities were provided (contact Holidays in St. Louis for more information), plus there are plenty of benches and local businesses close by. Come out to be a part of one of the most beloved Thanksgiving events complete with floats, marching bands, and familiar holiday characters.
The parade is held in downtown St. Louis on Market Street between Tucker Boulevard and Broadway, and kicks off at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 22.
Turkey Trots and Walks
There’s nothing like a pleasant walk to balance out that big holiday meal. Turkey trots aren’t just for runners—there are relaxed, shorter walk options that feature routes both flat and easy on your feet. Plus, you’ll find good parking and rest spots along the way.
- St. Louis Turkey Trot at Forest Park: 5K walk or run options are available or make extra room for Thanksgiving dinner with an 8K option.
- Kirkwood Webster Turkey Day Run: Don’t let the name scare you away — you can run or walk at your own pace. 3K and 6K options are available.
Annual Holiday Flower and Train Show at Missouri Botanical Garden
If you’d rather be inside, head to the Missouri Botanical Garden for their holiday flower and train show. The walkways are wide and easy to manage, and you can even rent a wheelchair for free if you like. Because it’s indoors, you can enjoy all the sights and activities no matter what the weather is outside.
- When: November 15 through January 3
- Where: Missouri Botanical Garden’s Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center’s Emerson Conservatory
- Why It’s Great for Seniors: Accessible, lots of places to sit, and all indoors.
Find Volunteer Opportunities
The holiday season is all about giving back. If you want to help others, there are plenty of ways to pitch in, including packing meals, delivering food, or just being a friendly face for someone who needs it. Most places have jobs you can do while sitting, and a variety of opportunities to choose from.
- St. Louis Area Foodbank: Packing and handing out meals.
- Meals on Wheels: Bring food and cheer to neighbors.

Handy Tips for Holiday Fun and Events
- Double-check accessibility and parking before you go out.
- Dress for the weather. While many events have indoor backup plans, you don’t want to get caught without a jacket when days can be brisk and windy.
- Bring a portable chair or cushion if you have one when attending events without ample seating.
- Ask about senior discounts!
- Need a ride? Local transportation options can get you there safely.
No matter how you choose to observe the holiday, St. Louis offers a lot of ways to have fun, connect and celebrate this Thanksgiving!
