Bethesda Lovebirds: Sterling and Annie’s Story

These Bethesda Lovebirds might just be the perfect pair. Sterling and Annie have been together for almost 70 years and love spending every day with each other at The Oaks at Bethesda.

How did you meet?

A: I knew his sister.

What were your first impressions of each other?

A: Smart…I like smart.

S: I always thought it was because I was a navy pilot. I loved her immediately.

A: Isn’t that so nice?

S: By the third date I knew I had found something.

What is your favorite thing about each other?

S: I think that we just like doing things together.

A: He is a very steady person, reliable. You can just tell about some people. He’s someone you can count on.

What is your best advice for young couples?

S: Be patient.

What do you enjoy doing together?

S: For years it was boating. We had a sailboat and we spent nearly every weekend when it was good weather.

A: Oh, not just good weather. (laughs, quoting Sterling) “Oh Annie, it’ll be okay, it’s going to blow over.”

What would you say makes your marriage successful?

S: We like to do the same things. We’re just very compatible.

A: We have endless things to talk about it seems like and I’m very grateful for that. Somehow we knew it was right.

S: There’s never been a doubt.
