Money can be tight, especially when you’re on a limited income like many seniors are. But that doesn’t mean they can’t still have a fun and active summer. There are plenty of senior discounts to be found for activities in St. Louis – both indoors and out. You just need to know where to look!
By seeking out good deals, you can still get a healthy dose of fun. Here are some examples of the best and most popular entertainment bargains for St. Louis seniors.
Museums to Browse
The Saint Louis Art Museum always has interesting exhibits on display and it’s especially affordable for older adults. While admission to the main exhibits is always free, the museum offers seniors aged 65 and older $5 off memberships that also include discounted parking and meals.
The St. Louis Science Center is popular not only for its interactive and historic exhibits, but also for its IMAX movie theatre. General admission is free. Seniors (as well as teachers and military personnel) are eligible for a $10 discount on an annual membership (Family & Friends MAX level or below) that gives them access to ticketed special events and exhibits. Just bring a valid ID card to the Oakland Building lobby. The discount is not available online or by mail.
The National Blues Museum offers interesting interactive exhibits and unforgettable historical artifacts – and of course opportunities to see live music! Admission is 20 percent off, just $12, for people 65 and up. It’s open Wednesdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Hit the Golf Course
While senior incentives vary from course to course, most golf sites offer discounts for seniors, military members and veterans, and other groups. We recommend calling your favorite course to find out what sort of deals they have to offer to make your golf outing more affordable.
Meet Me at the Movies
Catch a flick at an AMC Movie Theatre near you. Seniors aged 60 and up can get a discount on tickets to any show, any day of the week. If you’re ordering online, simply click on the senior discount option. To increase your savings, choose a matinee show for an additional 20 percent off.
Marcus Theatres offer $7.50 tickets daily for select shows starting before 4 p.m. The Everyday Matinee discount is available for kids under 12 and seniors over 60. On Fridays before 4 p.m., in addition to discounted ticket prices, Marcus Theatres’ Young at Heart special offers discounted concession prices to people over 60. A 14-ounce soda and a 44-ounce popcorn are available for $3.50 each and a 1/8-pound hot dog is $3.
Rollin’ on a Riverboat Cruise
Experience a St. Louis classic with a Mississippi River cruise. $2 discounts are available for one-hour excursions for seniors who are 60 years old and up. Deals are also available for packages that include a trip to the top of the Gateway Arch.
Free Summer Attractions
While these examples are a good place to start in the search for affordable fun, senior discounts aren’t the only way to make entertainment accessible for older St. Louis area residents. Don’t forget that St. Louis has a wealth of exciting attractions and activities that are free of charge for people of all ages (which makes them a great option for a day trip with kids or grandkids). They include the St. Louis Zoo, the Missouri History Museum, the Kemper Art Museum at Washington University, Forest Park and the Gateway Arch Museum. Grant’s Farm also offers free general admission, although there is a fee for parking.
