“Bethesda’s philosophy is that once you move in, you’re part of the family. I want to make sure finances don’t stand in the way of that — I want people to stay part of the family." -Ted Stein

Trading Hardships for Hope: Ted Stein’s Humanitarian Care Fund

Ted Stein has spent a lifetime making a difference in the lives of others.

As a general surgeon, his work demanded extraordinary skill, deep compassion, and an unrelenting dedication to every patient he served. Today, though retired from the operating room, Ted continues his mission of care — this time through heartfelt philanthropy.

A resident of Bethesda Barclay House since 2018, Ted quickly became a beloved member of the community. His infectious energy and genuine warmth have drawn around him a robust circle of friends. Whether gathering for Steak & Whiskey Night, participating in workout sessions, or exploring creativity in art workshops, Ted embraces community life with enthusiasm. Yet his impact extends far beyond social events.

Ted recently shared his intention to provide funds via his estate planning to create a Named Fund to support Bethesda’s Humanitarian Care program. Ted’s fund is Ted Stein Humanitarian Care Fund for Bethesda Barclay House. Ted’s legacy will continue to shine beyond his lifetime. His compassion, kindness, and dedication to caring for those in need will live on, touching lives for generations to come.

Through this thoughtful act of generosity, Ted hopes future residents will experience the same sense of belonging he treasures. His gift will help ensure that financial hardship never overshadows dignity, security, and community. “If you are fortunate enough to be in the position to give back, you should,” he shared. A simple yet powerful reflection of a life devoted to caring for others.

Many donors find that including Bethesda in their estate plans is a deeply meaningful way to make an even greater impact than they imagined. You can make that impact too.
